Serving students from throughout the world, Wayne State is located in the heart of Detroit's University Cultural Center.

Since its founding in 1868 as the Detroit Medical College, Wayne State University has continued to grow and evolve to meet the ever-changing educational and research needs of the community. Under the leadership of President Irvin D. Reid, Wayne State's growth has accelerated in recent years. Evidence of WSU's progress abounds:

  • $400 million in construction and other improvements since 1995
  • $200 million in annual research funding
  • More than a dozen new tenants joined the TechTown research and technology park in 2005
  • New residential suites opened in 2005, the third new student residence since 2002
  • New satellite campus in Port Huron, WSU's sixth satellite campus
  • New PhD program in social work launched in 2005
  • New $13.9 million grant and renewal of Karmanos Cancer Institute's national designation by the National Cancer Institute, in recognition of outstanding cancer research and care
  • Department of Athletics placed 25th in the country out of 285 in the final 2004-5 Directors' Cup standings of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the highest finish in WSU's history

Encompassing 203 acres of beautifully landscaped walkways and gathering spots, the campus links more than 100 education and research buildings. New campus buildings include The Towers Residential Suites (pictured), Ghafari Hall and South Hall, state-of-the-art student residences in the center of campus; the four-story Welcome Center, a one-stop student services center; a two-story bookstore with a coffee shop and lounge; and the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Our six satellite campuses, located in high-growth areas of Southeast Michigan, provide convenient access to a wide selection of programs and courses.

With a strong commitment to promoting diversity, developing new technologies and providing a high-quality education for today's global marketplace, WSU continues to grow in stature as one of the country's pre-eminent public, urban research universities.

In addition to the wealth of opportunities offered on campus, Wayne State University is within walking distance of The Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Historical Museum, The New Detroit Science Center, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the main branch of the Detroit Public Library. Within a few miles are Detroit's thriving theatre district, including the Fox and Gem theatres, Max M. Fisher Music Center, Detroit Opera House, Comerica Park and Ford Field.
