Founded in 1963 by the people of the mid-Michigan region, Saginaw Valley State University attracts more of the regions top students than any other college or university. SVSUs growing student population has access to facilities and technology that are among the most modern in the state. The faculty are dedicated to student-centered teaching. SVSU offers a selection of more than 80 programs leading to bachelors, masters, and specialists degrees.
Since its beginning, Saginaw Valley State University has experienced tremendous support from the community. SVSUs student enrollment also reflects a commitment from the east-central region of Michigan. Enrollment growth has been steady throughout SVSUs history with Fall 2001 enrollment at nearly 9,000 nearly 45 percent over the 1990 figure of 6,212.
One of 15 public universities in the state, SVSU is a comprehensive, fully accredited university located on a 782-acre campus in Saginaw Countys Kochville Township, in proximity to the communities of Bay City, Midland and Saginaw. In Fall 2001, student enrollment was 8,936 students. The youngest of Michigans public universities, SVSUs campus is spacious and modern. Most SVSU faculty have doctorate degrees and the average class size is 23 students. All classes are taught by faculty, not by graduate students.
The on-campus student population continues to grow and SVSU is prepared to meet the demand. Fall 1999, 2000 and 2001 saw the addition of a new housing option for students an upperclass living center and townhouse apartments were completed. These three housing projects more than doubled the number of students taking advantage of the many opportunities available to them through on-campus housing, with 1,500 residing on campus in Fall 2001.
Nearly 500 people work at the University. Many are involved in their local governments, churches, schools and communities. Several are involved in national and international organizations and travel. Still others bring individuals from all over the world to the SVSU campus and Saginaw community for lectures, concerts and performances. Many of these performances are open to the public at no charge, due to the generosity of individual, foundation and corporate donors.
