Location: Sault Sainte Marie, MI
Founded: 1946 Enrollment: 2,907 (2005) Website: http://www.lssu.edu/ Lake Superior State University is located at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, on the site of Fort Brady, a former United States Army post overlooking the St. Mary's River. Declared surplus in 1945, the fort was deeded to the State of Michigan. Started in 1946 as a branch of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology, LSSU became a four-year, degree-granting institution in 1966. Today it has an enrollment approaching 3500, and its students come from every Michigan county and beyond. Popular programs include teacher education, business, fisheries and wildlife management, biology, geology, criminal justice, recreation management and engineering, as well as programs in environmental science and social sciences. Ask our students and graduates about LSSU and they’ll tell you about a great education enhanced by their professors’ interest in them as people and as students. A Laker can tell you about unique opportunities where students work alongside their professors -- people who are here because they want to engage and teach students. LSSU is a place where learning by experience is a cornerstone of a student’s education where taking classroom theory and creating an education complete with practice/research and real-world applications is an everyday occurrence. Students find that the campus, unlike most, is full of opportunities to experience the Great Outdoors in some way. Lake State’s backyard is flanked by three of the Great Lakes and thousands of acres of forests. In addition to the natural setting, just across the St. Mary’s River is our twin city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Hundreds of northern Ontario students attend LSSU, providing an international experience for all of our students. |
