Saginaw Valley State University is welcoming 1,200 college students from across five states Tuesday as part of the Kennedy Center American College festival.
Aspiring playwrights and performers have the chance to advance to the national festival, April 15-21, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
The festival is a gathering of people to see one another's work and to share ideas. In addition to performances, there are a wide range of activities that in the past have included workshops and seminars on such topics as playwriting, auditioning, voice, theater for children and scenery construction, among others.
Michigan is included in Region 3 of the competition, with teams from Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
The Great Lakes Bay Region seeing a financial boost as well as out of town guests are expected to spend nearly two-point-eight million dollars during the festival.
The competition runs Jan. 8-12. SVSU previously hosted the event in 2009 and 2010.
