Once you arrive in Michigan, you certainly wont be the only international student. In 2001, more than 1 in 20 students at Michigans public universities came from outside the U.S. for their higher education. This is in part due to the universities emphasis on developing international connections for the regular exchange of students and faculty. One such example is the Japan Center for Michigan Universities, which is an exchange program resulting from a 30-year relationship with the Shiga Prefecture in Japan.
Michigan has forged strong business relationships with nations around the world. Michigan ranks 4th among the states in exports; sending its products and services to every continent. That makes sense when you consider that Michigan is home to more than 900 international companies and production facilities.
Surprisingly, getting to Michigans public universities can be easier than getting to many places on the East or West coasts. Michigan is home to Detroit Metropolitan Airport, one of the largest airports in North America and a major hub of the Northwest/KLM network of worldwide travel routes. The airport is currently undergoing a $2 billion expansion and improvement project and the new McNamara Terminal opened in early 2002. Daily nonstop travel to and from Asia and Europe is available daily, with connections to most of the worlds major cities.
